The Best Oil and Gas Podcasts.
If you want to build one of the best oil and gas podcasts, we’ve been doing it for longer than anybody else. And we’ve come up with a formula that works for us over and over again and it’s repeatedly. So, you start with the right sponsor. Who is a company that you want to work with, or they want to work with you? What product or solution are they trying to educate the oil and gas industry on? And then who would buy that product or solution? And the reason that is so important is by identifying who that audience is, you’re now defining your target audience and you can develop the right theme for your podcast.
Match the Podcast Format to Your Sponsor’s Goals
Then you can match the podcast format to your sponsor’s goals. A bunch of different formats for podcasts. A lot of people think that podcasts are interview style only. That’s not true. We have a bunch of formats that we’ve used depending on what our sponsor’s trying to accomplish. The different types of formats are solo episode, 101 interview, panel interview, co-hosted, controversial, non-fiction storytelling, fictional storytelling, repurposed content, and then hybrids – so a mix of any of these.
Once you figure out what your format is of your show, what your target audience is based upon your sponsor, then the next thing is you learn how to tell a story. A podcast is basically education through storytelling. So besides developing your interviewing skills, one of the most important things other than your interviewing skills is learn how to tell a story.
I’m doing it right now. When you tell a story, this goes way back in history, the format’s been around forever.
Do a little bit of research on marketing, storytelling, theater, and you’ll come up with the same basically standard, which is there’s three arcs in a story. There’s the beginning with a setup, which is what I did in the beginning with the title. There’s building the confrontation, which I’ve now built with what a podcast looks like, and then ultimately ending with a resolution, which we haven’t got to yet.
So, remember, three arc story is very simple. Building to a confrontation, ultimately ending with this resolution. Now, once you have all this stuff done, if you decided to do an interview-style podcast, make sure that you’re focusing on both the topic and the guests. In fact, I would say focus on the guests as much as not more than the topic.
You Need the Right Contributors for the Best Oil and Gas Podcasts
Make sure you invite the right contributors. It doesn’t necessarily have to be people with a senior title. It doesn’t have to be people with an engineering background. We prefer to have people that can tell good stories, that can engage in conversations regardless of where they are in the hierarchy of the company. A lot of times sales and marketing people make much better guests than engineers (unfortunate and sorry).
The biggest thing after all of this is quality audio. You don’t need to spend a fortune. We have a bunch of information in our videos showing you how to have quality audio for a minimum investment in gear, but quality audio is a must. Then be authentic, be real, be yourself, let your personality shine through. That’s how you connect with your audience.
Remember the audience ultimately listens to the podcast host or hosts not to the actual podcast. So be yourself. Then enjoy what you’re doing. It can come across if you’re enjoying what you’re doing, people catch that fire and contagion. Once again helps you grow an audience.
